As technology further infuses into our lived experiences, we become more virtual in how we perceive the world, others, and ourselves. Building on Donna Haraway’s posthuman metaphor of the cyborg, Francesca aims to spark conversation on our value of humanity in the digital age, and its role in how we consume media and occupy virtual spaces.
The speculative science fiction series simulates an editorial campaign surrounding a fashion animatronic named Francesca. The images are stills taken from the animatronic’s routine performance of editorial poses.
Some of the stills pastiche the calligraphic artwork of Abstract Expressionist Franz Kline. With permission of the frame's ambiguity, Medrano encourages the viewer to project their own internal images onto these articulated forms.
A machine made to be gazed upon or sympathized with, Francesca platforms an interpersonal conversation with the audience about the essence of humanity and its value in digital media. Made in NZ with love.
