Drift into the enchanting realm of Butterfly & Moth, a mesmerizing illustration by Paul Gervais (1816–1879). Emerging from Le Jardin des Plantes in 1842, this 19th-century treasure pairs the butterfly’s vibrant wings with the moth’s dusky allure, rendered in delicate, masterful strokes. Gervais’ keen naturalist eye meets artistic finesse, weaving a tapestry of vivid colours and subtle shadows that dance across their fragile forms, set against a hint of twilight foliage. Perfect for a whimsical retreat or a studious haven, this artwork threads French scientific elegance into any space, fluttering with timeless wonder and serene sophistication.

Paul Gervais (1816–1879) was a French zoologist, paleontologist, and entomologist renowned for his pioneering work in vertebrate paleontology and insect studies. Born François Louis Paul Gervais on September 26, 1816, in Paris, to a modest family, he pursued rigorous studies, earning doctorates in both science and medicine. Gervais began his career in 1835 as an assistant in the comparative anatomy lab at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris, working under Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville. In 1841, he took the chair of zoology and comparative anatomy at the Faculty of Sciences in Montpellier, becoming dean in 1856. His landmark publication, Zoologie et Paléontologie Françaises (1848–1852), expanded on the work of Georges Cuvier and Blainville, with a revised edition released in 1859.
