Gustav Klimt (1862–1918), an Austrian symbolist painter, was a pioneer of the Vienna Secession, known for his opulent, decorative style. Born near Vienna to a gold engraver, he trained at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, initially creating conventional murals. In 1897, he co-founded the Secession, embracing artistic innovation. His iconic works, like The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, feature gold leaf, intricate patterns, and sensual depictions of the female form, blending realism with abstraction. Inspired by Byzantine and Japanese art, Klimt explored love, desire, and mortality. Despite controversy, his visionary paintings, including The Tree of Life, left a profound legacy in modern art.
