LUCIA LAUBSCHER
Queen of Diamonds
A multi-medium exploration of indian inks, watercolour, acrylic and paint markers, this design was reworked digitally as a series of playing cards in a series of four. Featuring NZ Fantail (Pīwakawaka), she flits around as Queen, energetic and playful with her curious nature. Widely distributed throughout NZ, the Maori ori believed the fantail was responsible for the presence of death in the world. It was believed that if a fantail was seen inside a house it was bad luck and news of death would be imminent. This is due to the legend of Maui (a Demi-god from their folklore) thinking he could eradicate death by successfully passing through the goddess of death by entering through the goddess the pathway of birth. The fantail, warned by Maui to be quiet, began laughing and woke the goddess, who was so angry that she promptly killed Maui. Made in NZ with love.

Her work is diverse, encompassing large-scale murals to smaller canvases, photography and digital art. Her murals can be seen all over Auckland, including one of Auckland's Transport trains, where one of her designs was successful to make a train wrap, helping to spread messages of train safety.
Lucia loves learning new creative skills and incorporating them into her arts practice. She loves experimenting with different mediums and is continually learning new skills to expand her own creative endeavours and loves the process of creating.
Her most popular creations are imbued with symbolic narratives, reflecting her inherent talent for storytelling. Drawing inspiration from her environment, whether the local community or the natural vistas, Lucia crafts vibrant and colourful artworks that blend her African heritage with the diverse cultural influences of Aotearoa, seamlessly merging patterns and motifs from indigenous cultures with native flora and fauna.
Lucia's artistic mission revolves around fostering cultural connections, focusing on shared human experiences over differences. When Lucia is not immersed in her art, she enjoys being a wife and mum, raising four daughters, savouring a glass of wine, preparing delectable meals for her dear ones, or getting lost in the pages of captivating literature.
