About the Artist
Furuya Kōrin (1875–1910) was a Japanese artist, illustrator, and designer known for his vibrant contributions to the Kyoto arts and crafts scene during the Meiji period. Born in Kaizu, Shiga Prefecture, to a family of modest means, he adopted his pseudonym in homage to the famed Kyoto artist Ogata Kōrin, calling himself a "Kōrin of the modern age." Kōrin trained under notable masters like Suzuki Mannen, Kamisaka Sekka, and Asai Chu, blending traditional Japanese techniques with emerging Western influences. His career took off after winning the painting category at the Shinko Bijutsu Tenrankai in 1897, establishing him as a rising talent. Renowned for his woodblock-printed design books, such as Kōrin Moyō (Kōrin Patterns), he infused the Rinpa style with fresh, colourful patterns that captivated kimono makers and art enthusiasts alike.
