About the Artist
Leonetto Cappiello (1875–1942) was an Italian-French artist hailed as the "father of modern advertising" for his groundbreaking poster designs. Born in Livorno, Italy, he began as a caricaturist, sketching for French magazines before relocating to Paris in 1898. There, he transformed advertising with bold, colourful posters featuring dynamic figures against stark backgrounds, like his famous 1903 Chocolat Klaus design with a leaping green horse. Over four decades, he produced over 1,000 works for brands like Campari and Cinzano, merging whimsy with commercial flair. He died in Cannes in 1942, leaving a legacy that shaped modern graphic design.
