About the Artist
Henri Rousseau (1844–1910) was a French painter celebrated for his vivid, imaginative depictions of jungles and exotic scenes, despite never leaving France. Born in Laval, Mayenne, to a tinsmith father, Julien Rousseau, and his wife, Éléonore, he led a humble early life marked by financial struggles. Rousseau worked as a toll collector in Paris for over two decades, earning the nickname “Le Douanier” (The Customs Officer), before turning to painting full-time in his 40s. Self-taught, he debuted at the Salon des Indépendants in 1886, gaining recognition for his naive yet bold style, rich with lush foliage and fantastical animals. His most famous works, like The Sleeping Gypsy and The Dream, showcase his unique blend of innocence and mystery, influencing modern art despite initial ridicule from critics.
